Background

Fundraising by China-focused private equity investors has fallen to its lowest level in 13 years in the first quarter of 2022, down over 90% YOY. Since the start of the Chinese Tech Crackdown last summer, many foreign investors have fled China and labelled it as “uninvestable”. This year, challenges for those invested in China have continued, as China holds on to its strict Zero-COVID policy, the War in Ukraine affects supply chains and worries mount over an escalation of the Taiwan conflict.

As the Chinese market continues to see heavy foreign investment outflows, investors have to ask themselves: What is to be expected of Chinese policymaking going forward? How will Chinese regulation impact private and public markets in the future? And most of all, should China still be a core investment geography for us?
